2 Hour Table Re-Do

painting furniture, how to paint a table, table re-do

I bought this little table at a yard sale years ago. Of course, I never used it, or re-finished it ~ why would I buy a table and use it? Why would I finish it?

I moved it from room to room, hiding it in the corners of hallways, or the recesses of our dungeon  basement.

And then, one day (at band camp) I decided to either throw it out, or do something cute with it. I didn't think I would have any use for a small table, but I realized might be the perfect size as an end table for the kids game room.

So, here's what I did:

I gave it fifty lashes with a wet noodle  Kilz primer. (You can use the primer you're used to, Kilz is what I had in the basement. And to be honest, it was the easiest for me to reach!) When I prime I give it a good coating and I don't worry about being very precise. I used a brush, rather than a foam brush or roller.

Once the primer dried, I gave the table two coats of a dark grey paint (Home Depot "oops") that I had kickin' around.

And I let that dry.

Even after two coats, it was still pretty boring.

So I taped off a couple of stripes using blue painter's tape, to give the table some racing strips in a lighter grey ("oops" paint again).

Before the paint stripes were completely dry, I carefully removed the tape, pulling to the outside (as per below). I find that the tape can peel off the paint if it sits too long, so I generally try to remove it as soon as I can.

I gave it a good spray with polyurethane, and voila! The little table looks much better ~ and it only took me about 2 hours.

(Yes, I procrastinated 8 years, to avoid 2 hours of work, but I did it! Get out the champagne!)

Oh yeah, the little guy wanted to photo bomb... Here he is with the table that will end up in the game room, covered in Lego's, PS3 controllers, or crayon....

Tell me you do the same thing ~ buy yard sale finds and then lug them around for years before you get around to doing something with them?!?!

Wow! that is really beautiful!
I am so familiar with moving things all over the house until getting the time to throw them or do something useful with them.
Thanks for the lovely post!
