The Easy Way to Hang Large Paintings and Mirrors

hang large painting, hanging mirrors, easy diy, life hack

This is by far, the easiest way to hang a large painting or mirror.

I have this large mirror that I wanted to hang near my back door,
so I thought I'd show you all how easy it is.

To hang it I'm going to need two screws anchored into the wall,
because it's a bit heavy. If I'm going to be hanging other things from it (my keys or purse), I want it very secure.

The easiest way to measure the space between the two hangers,
is to use painters tape.

And then cut the tape to exactly where the screw or nail will go.

When you've cut the tape you simply put it up on the wall where you want it.

(You can use a level to make sure it's perfectly even, but I never do.
I just put it on the wall, stand back, and adjust it if needs be.)

The next step is to drill your holes.  (See my new drill?)

Next comes the anchor and the screw,
and you're ready to hang your painting or mirror.

Leave the screw sticking out a little.

It works perfectly every time!

Pin this to remember it for the next time you need to hang a large piece. :)

Replant Lucky Bamboo

indoor house plants, replant house plants, lucky bamboo, home decor

If you have a Lucky Bamboo, every couple of years you're going to need to replant it.

We recently moved, as you all might remember, and in my infinite wisdom I decided to leave my plants at the "old house", so that they would add to the aesthetics.  Yesterday I stopped by the old house and let's just say, plants do not like being left alone in a cold house.

After wedging them in the trunk I brought them home to assess the damage.  I decided that my lucky bamboo, now about 4 feet tall, which was wedged into a tiny vase, needed a fresh start.

But How to get the bamboo out of the old vase? I pulled gently and the roots were larger than the opening of the vase.  So I did the most logical thing I could think of, and put the vase in the kitchen sink and whacked it with a hammer.  Nothing. (Well there's something ~ there's a dent in the sink.)

Hmmmm.  I toyed with taking the plant and vase out to the driveway, and smashing it there.  Probably not a good idea. Proud of myself for averting a deflated ball  deflated tire, I ran down to the basement to see if I had something heavier than the hammer.  While down there I realized, I can smash it on the cinder blocks! I'm a genius!

With the vase smashed to smithereens, I ran upstairs with my now naked lucky bamboo.

Time for it's bath.  While humming Rubber Ducky You're the One, I gave the leaves a spray down, as well as cleaned the roots, using water that was about room temperature.

Next I simply used a large glass vase, and river rocks (shocker - they're my new favorite thang) to hold the roots in places.

It's pretty big.  I'm not sure where to put it yet, so it's gonna hang in a corner for now.

I JUST remembered ~ I never swept the smashed vase in the basement. Better get on that. Have an awesome weekend!

White Lasagna with Turkey ~ Crockpot Meal

lasagna, crockpot meal, lasagna in a crockpot, white lasagna

Last week I was bored to tears. You know, wandering around, finding anything to do ~ I even swept. I KNOW, right?

This week I plan to rectify that.  So my plan is to whitewash my red brick fire place. I'm a little nervous, but it's gonna happen.  If you wish me luck, I'll give you the best recipe ever.

See it up there? Don't you want that?

If so, head over to The Adventures of J-Man and MillerBug and check out her recipe for White Turkey Lasagna! I made it the other night and it's the perfect throw together easy peasy lemon squeezy meal!

A couple of notes:

  • I used Dreamfield's Lasagna noodles, to make this recipe low carb.
  • Double up on the fresh garlic.  Just a suggestion!
  • Add a tsp or two of chili flakes ~ hot pepper brings out the flavor of cheese.
  • When I made this it was done it 3 hours on low.  So I turned it to warm until we were ready to eat.

DIY Cinnamon Candle Holder

cinnamon stick crafts, candle holder, kitchen decor

The other day, my daughter made me go to Carpe Diem online. A handy site that lets people know how many years they have left to live.

(I don't suggest you go to that sight.  Just don't. You might get depressed and find yourself in the basement, sitting on the floor, staring into the corner.)

A week later, and the meds have finally kicked in and I feel a little better, so I seize the day, and go back to the basement like a normal person.

One of the things I love in my new house ~ my little work bench in my basement.  It's all messy and a little "old man-ish", but I still adore it, cuz it's mine.

Sometimes I go down there just to look at it.  Today I looking at my workbench, and saw a couple of things: that raffia, and a bag of cinnamon sticks.

So then, I scoured my house for a for a little candle holder.  And I found this. Perfect.

A little hot glue and I made this.

Cozy, and I like that, because it's been ice cold here. What are you up to this week?

River Rock Centerpiece

B.O.R.E.D.

Like so bored I was contemplating sweeping. Seriously. That's bored.

What was I going to do?

In order to avoid what clearly would have been soul-destroying, I went down to the basement and grabbed a piece of wood and gave it a little grey paint.

Grey or gray? I'm going with grey ~ it seems a way cooler spelling, doesn't it?

Grey to start, and then I let it dry.

(**Crickets chirping**)

Once dry, I spread on some white paint.

This was very meticulous work, as you can see below.

Joking.  I slapped it on there, and let it dry again.

All the while, I managed to avoid doing any mind-numbing housework.
I reassured myself that I was busy!

Like most crazy DIY bloggers, I have 12 bags full of river rocks, so I grabbed them, and these cute little candle holders. I toyed with the idea of gluing it all together, but then I heard:

"Put the glue down Jules." (That was my smart twin.)

So I did this:

All in all it was a fairly productive afternoon.  I made a new centerpiece, and I successfully managed to avoid the housework. And that was the whole point.

What do you do when you're bored? Tell me I'm not the only grown-up that will do just about anything to avoid housework... please.
